Damaged Leather

Damaged leather is in a class of it’s own and requires special attention to how it is repaired.

The damage can be anything from rips, tears, abrasions which have damaged the top grain and finish, as well as cracks from allowing the leather to become too dry.

The most expensive leathers are the most delicate and will damage easily. So damage to leather is usually a sign that something damaged the leather–not a sign of the quality of the leather.

The leather quality is determined by the tanning process. The most important element of the process is whether or not the hide was processed as full grain. Full grain is the intact hide, with the surface very lightly sanded to remove small natural imperfections. This is the strongest and most durable hide for use on furniture.
